In Your Eyes, Before My Own
Eunjo Lee’s In Your Eyes, Before My Own explores human and non-human consciousness and the interconnectivity of matter.
Moving through three worlds, each representing a different layer of consciousness, the meticulously composed video work follows the dream-like journey of a voice towards self-knowledge. Its characters and objects have been minutely modelled by the artist using a range of digital tools through a process Lee refers to as “.” According to the artist, each element of the work possesses its own cognition and agency.
In Your Eyes, Before My Own draws inspiration from psychology and ancient philosophy. Referencing theories on the evolution of consciousness and language as well as Buddhist thought, the artist questions the distinctions between the individual and the whole and imagines a shared origin between consciousness and matter.
“if you understand how the inherited image breathes
you will come to understand your own darkness as well“ – Excerpt from the voiceover of In Your Eyes, Before My Own
In Your Eyes, Before My Own was originally commissioned by LAS Art Foundation in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture Lab, and developed during a six-month LAS Online Artist Residency 2025-2026. The residency set out to support two artists, Eunjo Lee and Xin Liu, in exploring digital world building and the simulation of living systems. It gave them specialised access to AI tools and technical advisory and engineering support from Google Arts & Culture Lab, alongside continuous support from the LAS curatorial team. Through in-depth processes of research and experimentation, both artists imaginatively probed the technologies that increasingly shape the environments we move through. “I deeply hope that technology does not remain a mere tool for efficiency; rather, I wish it to evolve into a medium that restores the cosmic connectivity marginalised by rationalist discourse and reveals the spiritual resonance flowing beneath existence.“
